Exploring enterprise social media fatigue from cognitive load and technostress perspectives:Results from the multigroup comparison experiment

Abstract
Although enterprise social media platforms such as DingTalk and WeCom have become widely accepted in industries,the dark side of work-oriented social media has been less discussed in existing literature.In IS domain,scholars use the term social media fatigue to describe users' emotional strain while sustaining usage behavior.Specifically,it describes users' overwhelmed psychological status because of continuously connecting with social media applications.Feeling too fatigued,they may have less interest and motivation towards the tool.A majority of prior studies have constrained social media fatigue to personal use context ignoring the possibility of employees' emotional fatigue in the workplace.While organizational sciences often use technostress to explain the exhaustion status due to the unfitness between ICT and personal capability.This study explores the inducers of enterprise social media fatigue by reviewing literature on technostress and personal-used social media with integrative insights. Information overload has been proved to be the predominant stressor that leads to user fatigue,while the mechanism between information overload and enterprise social media fatigue in the workplace is still vague.Based on the perspectives of cognitive load theory and technostress,this study builds the research model and analyzes the data with the structural equation modeling method.The conceptual model investigates the relationships among information overload,cognitive fatigue,invasion of life,and enterprise social media fatigue.Given the fact that enterprise social media is employed within organizations,we propose that organizational type can moderate individuals' feelings of fatigue.Those employees working in public sectors may possess high job security and relatively fixed positions,whereas competition may be fierce in private sector arising higher level of stress.In this vein,this paper assumes that public employees encounter less stress because they are able to successfully manage their work-family boundaries.Our work examines the effects of organizational types on enterprise social media fatigue formulating process,so that uncovering the intrinsic determinants of fatigue and providing practical suggestions on interventions. The empirical results are as follows.Firstly,all path relationships in the proposed model are statistically significant.Information overload positively impacts cognitive fatigue and invasion of life.Information overload,cognitive fatigue,together with invasion of life positively impacts enterprise social media fatigue.Secondly,the significant moderating effect of organizational type on the link between information overload and invasion of life indicates that organizational type serves as an important variable.Employees in the private sector have strong feelings of life invasion due to information overload.Thirdly,the model has substantial explanation power with the R square of enterprise social media fatigue equal to 0.64.That is,information overload,invasion of life,and cognitive fatigue are three crucial predictors of enterprise social media fatigue.The findings could shed light on how enterprise social media fatigue is established. This study has theoretical contributions and practical implications.Firstly,it contributes to the social media fatigue theories by proving that employees also suffer fatigue status due to continuously using enterprise social media.The evidence shows that features of enterprise social media engender users' strong feelings of life invaded.Most enterprise social media are mobile applications requiring users' telephone numbers to log in.Constant accessibility allows work-related information to spill over into the private sphere causing users fatigue.It was also found that the overwhelming information could lead to employees' cognitive fatigue.Few prior studies have interpreted cognitive impairment caused by information overload.Nowadays,enterprise social media enable not only chatting with colleagues instantly but also performing various tasks.With the rising of enterprise social media,cognitive resources are increasingly consumed in daily work routines.Secondly,Our results provide evidences that organizational type has impact on employees' fatigue feelings.When employees work in private sector,they are more likely to experience life invasion derived from overwhelming information.To the best of our knowledge,this paper is the first attempt to depict the influences of organizational structure on employees' social media fatigue,which deepen the understanding of inducers of fatigue and technostress in the workplace.Regarding the practical implications,we expect managers to pay more attention to the boundary of enterprise social media.Reducing work-home conflicts,and eliminating the impacts of social media on life invasion so as to inhibit the employees' fatigue.关键词
