Abstract

[Objective]Northwestern hill areas of Guangxi,an ideal rice producing area,is an important food producing base in China.However,the region has a limited variety of rice varieties and relatively outdated cultivation techniques,which restrict the stability of yields and the sustain-able development of the industry.This study aimed to optimize the variety structure of early rice in the northwestern hill areas of Guangxi,addressing challenges such as limited varieties,insufficient stress resistance,and outdated conventional cultivation techniques,which could provide a reference for improving rice yield and quality in the region.[Method]From 2023 to 2024,field experiments of rice varieties Wantaiyou Meizhan and Teyou 831(CK)were conducted in Long'an Town,Yihe Town,and Xiaochangan Town of Luocheng Mulao Autonomous County that represents typical hill areas of Guangxi.In 2023,the yield differences between the Wantaiyou Meizhan and Teyou 831(CK)under conventional cultivation were examined.In 2024,under two treatments of conventional cultivation and high-yield direct-seeding cultivation techniques,the differences in yield,grains per panicle,seed setting rate,1 000-grain mass,chalkiness,transparency,alkali spreading value,gel consistency,and amylose were determined to evaluate the adaptability of high-yield direct-seeding cultivation techniques for Wantaiyou Meizhan in the hilly region.[Result]Wantaiyou Meizhan showed significant yield increase in the two consecutive years:the yield was 8 144.02 kg/hm² in 2023,indicating an increase of 9.32%compared to that of CK;the yield was 8 039.78 kg/hm² in 2024,indicating an increase of 6.76%compared to that of CK,with an interannual variation coeffi-cient<1.0%.The high-yield direct-seeding cultivation technique increased the grains per panicle by 4.5,improved the seed setting rate from 80.0%to 85.5%,and further raised yield to 8431.17 kg/hm²,increasing approximately 391 kg/hm2(4.87%)compared to that under conventional cultivation.In terms of quality,Wantaiyou Meizhan under direct-seeding cultivation technique showed a chalki-ness of 1.6%,a gel consistency of 73.0 mm,and an amylose content of 16.0%,with no significant difference in grain transparency compared to that under conventional cultivation.[Conclusion]Wantaiyou Meizhan demonstrated the characteristics of high and stable yield,and good grain quality in northwestern hill areas of Guangxi.The high-yield direct-seeding cultivation technique enhanced its seed setting rate and grains per panicle while maintaining the grain quality,thus supporting further yield improvement.
