Abstract
The knowledge and understanding of the British of China used to be mainly from the accounts of the Jesuits and a few reports, travelogues and other secondary sources of European missions and explorers in China. The visit of Macart-ney's mission to China greatly promoted the observation and understanding of the British on China.Since then, they mainly relied on their own observation and experience of China to understand and recognize China, and Sinology emerged. In the almost half-century from the inception of the early diplomatic relations between China and Britain to the great changes,si-nologists played an important role in the major interactions between China and Britain based on their own knowledge and un-derstanding of China. This article takes the visit of Macartney's mission to China and the rise of Sinology as the base point, and the trade disputes between China and Britain in the early days of the Guangzhou port and the visit of Amherst's mission to China,as well as the vote on the British Parliament's motion concerning China as the time and space threads and fields of the narrative. This article explains the position, viewpoints and measures taken by Chinese scholars, such as George Thomas Staunton, during the major Sino-British interactions in the early period, based on their own perceptions of China and their domestic situation, and reveals the game between"diplomacy"and"force"in Britain's early strategy towards Chi-na.The British strategy towards China in the early days is revealed by the game between"diplomacy"and"force".关键词
