Fragrant like Orchids and Musk:Ouyang Xiu's Literary Depictions of Incense Culture and the Construction of His Spiritual World
摘要
Abstract
During the Song Dynasty,incense culture flourished as a practical means for literati and scholar-officials to culti-vate virtue.In particular,Ouyang Xiu infused fragrance with rich aesthetic and spiritual connotations,blended his sensory in-cense experiences with patriotic feelings,enriched with virtue and ethical content.By intertwining emotions with incense,he cre-ated an olfactory framework of"scent-emotion",transforming smell into visual imagery to form a unique"incense language"sys-tem and"incense imagery"symbols.Through incense-related activities,Ouyang constructed a spiritual refuge for literati,elevat-ing olfactory experiences to spiritual purification and self-reflection,thereby raising incense culture to a Dao-carrying spiritual realm.His writings on incense transcend sensory documentation,delved into life philosophy,social relations,and living wisdom.From incense appreciation to burning,and eventually to Dao,incense remains a key medium for literati to construct spiritual uto-pias,whose cultural connotation still nourishes modern aesthetics.关键词
