Abstract

In metro systems with small-radius curves,rail welds are prone to crack damage,which seriously affects operational safety and shortens rail service life.While numerous studies have investigated two-dimensional weld irregularities,research on the three-dimensional profile of rail welds is still lacking.To explore the effect of the three-dimensional weld profile on wheel-rail impacts,the three-dimensional geometry of rail welds on a small-radius circular curve of a metro line was measured using a BBM rail roughness tester and a MiniProf rail profile measuring device.A full wheelset three-dimensional transient rolling contact model was then employed to analyze the rolling contact and impact characteristics at the measured weld joints.The wheel-rail impact responses caused by the three-dimensional weld profile were compared with those caused by two-dimensional weld irregularities.The results showed that:(1)At rail weld joints in circular curve sections,the irregularity waveforms of the inner rail were generally similar.The closer the weld joint was to the curve center,the deeper the irregularity wave depth.The outer rail followed the same pattern.Compared to the outer rail,the inner rail exhibited greater wave depths.(2)In the light band zones of both inner and outer rail welds,the weld center exhibited the greatest light band width,and the maximum irregularity wave depth occurred along the light band centerline.Compared with the two-dimensional weld irregularities,the three-dimensional weld profile more effectively captured the longitudinal and transverse irregularities of the top surface in the weld zone.(3)Significant wheel-rail impact forces occurred in the weld zones of both rails.The contact patch area,adhesion area ratio,and peak wear depth within the contact patch all showed a positive correlation with the vertical wheel-rail force.Furthermore,the peak wear depth was greater on the inner rail than on the outer rail.(4)Compared with the two-dimensional weld irregularities,applying the three-dimensional weld profile did not significantly change the macroscopic waveform of wheel-rail impact force.However,the vertical force peaks of the inner and outer rails increased by 1.9%and 2.4%respectively.At the microscopic level,the boundary between the slip and adhesion zones within the contact patch became more indistinct,and slip and adhesion points exhibited an overlapping distribution.The wear distribution within the contact patch became more complex,with peak wear depth increasing by 12.6%on the inner rail and 21.1%on the outer rail,respectively.
