A Comparative Study on the WHO Western Pacific and the 2022 WHO International Standard for Terminologies of Traditional Chinese Medicine:Etiology and Pathogenesis Sections

Abstract
A comparative analysis was conducted on the etiology and pathogenesis sections of the WHO international standard terminologies on traditional medicine in the Western Pacific region and the 2022 edition of WHO international standard terminologies on traditional Chinese medicine to identify the similarities and differences in their translations,hoping to provide useful references for the international standardization of TCM terminologies.The terms on etiology and pathogenesis were extracted and converted into Excel tables for statistics.The statistics revealed that 53 Chinese terms were found to be identical in both versions,while only 13 terms were found to be identical in English translation.A comparison of the English translations of the same Chinese terms reveals that there are some differences in terminol-ogy selection,translation accuracy,and cultural adaptability between the two versions.The 2022 edition better reflects the systematic and logical nature of the theoretical framework of TCM in the selection and arrangement of terminolo-gies,with greater accuracy and fidelity in English translation as well as greater emphasis on retaining the cultural char-acteristics and connotations of TCM terminologies.As the latest achievement in the process of international standardi-zation of TCM terminologies,the 2022 edition provides a more solid linguistic foundation for the international dissemi-nation and exchange of TCM culture.关键词
