Crossbreeding as a Strategic Innovation in Dairy Cattle:Implementation and Trends

Abstract
In recent years,advancements in reproduction and breeding technologies,such as sexed semen and genomic selection,have significantly enhanced the reproductive efficiency of dairy cattle.This progress enables dairy farms to maintain herd balance by selecting a small proportion of desired cows to produce replacement heifers.In leading dairy-producing regions,such as Europe and North America,dairy breeding strategies are undergoing a shift,transitioning from traditional purebred dairy breeding to a dual approach that integrates purebred dairy breeding with dairy-beef crossbreeding(beef-on-dairy).While maintaining a focus on enhancing milk production performance through the use of high-quality dairy semen,the dairy farms are increasingly incorporating beef semen to produce dairy-beef crossbred calves to enhance economic benefits.This paper provides a comprehensive review of the benefits and advantages of dairy-beef crossbreeding strategies,methodologies for developing these strategies,the methodology for formulating such strategies,and critical factors for successful implementation.The review aims to offer practical insights and technical guidance for dairy farms in China to adopt and optimize beef-on-dairy crossbreeding strategies effectively.关键词
