From Apathy to Awakening:A Study on the Public's Political Identification with the Communist Party of China in the Jin-Cha-Ji Border Region During the Total War of Resistance Against Ja-pan

Abstract
Through sustained political mobilization,the Communist Party of China(CPC)built popular politi-cal identification,a critical means by which it established and consolidated the Anti-Japanese base area in the Jin-Cha-Ji(Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei)Border Region and led resistance behind enemy lines during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression(1937-1945).At the outset of the all-out war,KMT forces on the North China front crumbled and governance unraveled,while public attitudes toward resistance were largely indifferent—creating a political-identification void in Jin-Cha-Ji.Responding to this,the CPC opened up the base area and,following the Anti-Japanese National United Front's class analysis,made poor peasants,hired laborers,and middle peasants the core constituencies for cultivating identification.It did so by integrating residents into mass organizations(organizational mobilization),raising political consciousness and cultural literacy(ideological mobilization),securing material livelihoods(economic mobilization),and encoura-ging participation in building border-region governing institutions(political mobilization).In the process,the CPC skillfully managed relations among landlords,rich peasants,and the broader populace,producing a logic of identity formation in which organizational,value,interest-based,and institutional identification respectively served as the distinctive form,cultural source,fundamental guarantee,and sustaining mechanism.These prac-tices showcase the CPC's political wisdom in base-area governance and provide enduring lessons for strengthe-ning Party-mass relations and consolidating popular political identification.关键词
