An Analysis of Ye Tianshi's Principle of Emphasizing"Regulating and Restoring Yin Deficiency of the Yangming Collaterals to Restrain Hyperactive Liver Yang Transforming into Wind"in Treating Stroke

Abstract
This paper,based on the stroke section of the Case Records as a Guide to Clinical Practice as the primary text and referencing preceding and subsequent chapters,analyzes the profound meaning of Ye Gui's(Ye Tianshi)emphasis on"regulating and restoring yin deficiency of the Yangming collaterals to restrain hyperactive liver yang transforming into wind"in treating stroke.Its main tenets are summarized as follows:First,the mutual conflict between"yin deficiency of the Yangming collaterals and hyperactive liver yang transforming into wind"is regarded as one of the important pathological chains of stroke due to the failure of earth(spleen/stomach)to control wood(liver).Second,the characteristics of treating stroke based on this pathological chain include:primarily"regulating and restoring yin deficiency of the Yangming collaterals"supplemented by"restraining hyperactive liver yang transforming into wind";simultaneously applying"regulating and restoring yin deficiency of the Yangming collaterals"and"restraining hyperactive liver yang transforming into wind";focusing on"tonifying liver and kidney yin to subdue yang and extinguish wind"supplemented by"regulating and restoring yin deficiency of the Yangming collaterals".Additionally,"regulating and restoring yin deficiency of the Yangming collaterals"emphasizes the use of sweet and cool moistening agents such as Maidong(Ophiopogon Japonici Radix,Liriope Spicata Radix)and Shihu(Dendrobii Caulis)for unblocking and tonifying.Third,this overall treatment method originates from Ye's integration of his original theories:the"theory of internal wind stirring,"the"theory of stomach yin,"and the"theory of collateral disease.".关键词
