Germplasm Characteristics of Berkshire Pigs and Their Application in the High-quality Pork Production Industry

Abstract
In pig production,breeds are the key factors determining the economic efficiency of the pig industry,the quality of pork products,and the comprehensive market competitiveness.As a cultivated breed with both long-standing historical inheritance and significant industrial value,the development process of Berkshire pig reflects the changing consumption trends in the global pig in-dustry,which has shifted from a preference for the fatty type pigs to the lean type pigs and subsequently to the high-quality meat type pigs.Since the early 20th century,China has started to introduce Berkshire pigs.Over the following one hundred-odd years,Berkshire pigs have undergone multiple generations of germplasm iterations,including British,Russian,Japanese,and American lines,and have played a crucial role in various historical periods.This paper systematically reviews the breeding history,germplasm characteristics,global spread,rise and decline of the Berkshire pig,as well as their utilization in China's pig production.Additional-ly,in view of the market demand for high-quality pork under the background of consumption upgrading,three application models are summarized.This article provides theoretical foundation and practical approaches for the development of Berkshire germplasm resources and the advancement of China's high-quality pork industry.关键词
