Abstract

Adverse karst formation are prone to trigger various extreme environmental geological safety risks in directional drilling and crossing projects of oil and gas pipelines,and represent a major hidden dangers for the safe operation of completed pipelines.The borehole-based pipe wave karst detection method has obvious advan-tages due to its convenient and intuitive data analysis,but the understanding of the wave field characteristics of pipe waves is not deep enough,which affects the quantitative interpretation effect of karst anomalies.To address this,by establishing a karst numerical model,the propagation and energy distribution characteristics of pipe waves in the borehole and the surrounding rock were first simulated and analyzed;Then it was verified that the detection radius of the pipe wave was related to the frequency of the pipe wave,approximately half of the wave-length of the pipe wave.The use of a pressure-type hydrophone can better achieve the reception of high-quality pipe waves.Tests showed that both single-hole and cross-hole excitation can obtain pipe wave signals.Further-more,it revealed the corresponding relationship between the burial depth,scale and distance from the hole of karst geological formation and the position,size and energy of the"eight-shaped"wave group of pipe waves.Based on this,a karst identification method based on borehole pipe waves was developed.Finally,in field tests of pipeline crossing karst detection,the karst anomaly at a burial depth of 28 meters was accurately identified by using this method,which was completely consistent with the borehole exposure.The research results showed that the rapid identification and location of karst anomalies near the borehole can be achieved by using the bore-hole pipe wave,which can provide a physical basis for the geological safety assessment and disaster control of the karst section where pipelines pass through.
