Abstract
When pronounced chén,the Chinese characters 沈(shěn)and 沉(chén)share the same meaning and usage;however,the relationship between the two characters is complex,as phenomena of confusion and differentiation in their use can be observed in historical documents.In modern Chinese,沉(chén),which denotes the meaning of"to sink",has been separated from 沈(shěn),which is used as a surname,and has become an independent character—this is consistent with the laws of script development.Such a phenomenon deserves attention when examining the history of the standardization of the Chinese language and Chinese characters.关键词
