Abstract

The Shenhu sea area is situated southeast of Shenhu Shoal in the central part of the northern continental slope of the South China Sea.Tectonically,it belongs to the Zhu Ⅱ Depression of the Pearl River Mouth Basin and exhibits favorable conditions for natural gas hydrate accumulation.To investigate the material sources of the surface sediments in this area,this study conducted component analysis on sediments from the HSSY03 station using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS)based on geological surveys.The study primarily examined the geochemical characteristics of rare earth elements(REEs)and explored sediment provenance along with its contributing factors through a comparative analysis of regional geochemical indicators.The results indicate a close relationship between the surface sediments at this station and terrigenous input.ΣREE shows a significant positive correlation with Fe,Ti,and Mn elements,while a notable negative correlation is observed with Sr and Ca elements.This suggests that the sediments at the HSSY03 station are of a mixed sedimentary type.The sediments are primarily derived from terrigenous clastics input from the Pearl River Basin,authigenic components,and biogenic carbonate sediments,all of which contribute significantly to the provenance.This study provides a scientific basis for a deeper understanding of the formation mechanisms of natural gas hydrates in the Shenhu sea area.
