Abstract

While sluice construction enhances water resource utilization efficiency,it simultaneously increases the risk of river algal blooms.To evaluate the effectiveness of constructed wetlands in improving water ecological environments of sluice-controlled rivers,this study selected Dongxi River and its adjacent surface-flow constructed wetland in eastern Guangdong as research subjects.Through monthly water quality monitoring in 2023,along with hydrological observations and phytoplankton community analysis,we systematically assessed the wetland's purification efficiency and its ecological impacts.The results suggested that purification efficiency shows strong seasonal variation,with higher pollutant removal rates during wet seasons(28.68%~69.74%for NH3-N,TP,TN,and CODMn)compared to dry seasons(7.85%~38.75%).Algal control is remarkable,with an 80%reduction in phytoplankton density and chlorophyll-a(Chl-a)in treated water.During the continuous operation of the wetland in the dry season,the average treated water volume was 0.5 m3·s-1,accounting for 6.4%of the concurrent river flow.Under the combined influence of upstream inflow and the wetland's water extraction and replenishment,the average flow rate and velocity in the river section upstream of the sluice increased by 32.45%and 32.98%,respectively.Meanwhile,the phytoplankton density and Chl-a concentration in the river water decreased by 50.06%and 21.05%,respectively,leading to an improvement in the aquatic ecological environment upstream of the sluice.This demonstrates that bypass surface-flow constructed wetlands hold significant potential for mitigating eutrophication and controlling algal blooms in regulated slow-flow water bodies.
