Impact of salinity on anaerobic digestion performance of municipal sludge

Abstract
To address the widespread issue of elevated salinity in municipal wastewater treatment plants in China's coastal cities(primarily caused by seawater intrusion),which subsequently disrupts anaerobic digestion systems for sewage sludge,this study investigated the mechanistic impacts of salinity loading on anaerobic digestion performance by dosing NaCl and MgCl2 to simulate increased salinity in municipal sludge.The results demonstrated that under identical chloride ion(Cl-)mass concentrations,NaCl salinity exerted significantly stronger inhibitory effects on anaerobic hydrolysis and biogas production than MgCl2 salinity,with sodium ions(Na+)showing greater inhibition than chloride(Cl-)and magnesium ions(Mg2+).Low-concentration Na+immediately inhibited biogas production,whereas low-concentration MgCl2(Cl-≤ 6 g·L-1)initially stimulated gas generation without significantly affecting cumulative yield.As exogenous salinity increased,methane production was more severely inhibited than hydrolysis,leading to acid accumulation.Fitting results from the modified Gompertz model and salinity inhibition kinetics confirmed that NaCl salinity more markedly suppressed both maximum biogas potential and maximum production rate compared to MgCl2.High-throughput sequencing further revealed that Methanothrix exhibited notable salt tolerance,with acetoclastic methanogenesis becoming the dominant pathway under high-salinity conditions.关键词
