Principal component and path analysis of phenotypic traits of Maccullochella peelii with different monthly ages

Abstract
To study the effects of morphological traits on body mass of Maccullochella peelii at different developmental stages,a comprehensive study was conducted on 10 trait indexes,including total length(X1),body length(X2),body depth(X3),head length(X4),trunk length(X5),head length posterior to eyes(X6),eye diameter(X7),caudal peduncle length(X8),caudal peduncle depth(X9)and body diameter(Y).These traits were measured at 4-month-old,12-month-old,and 24-month-old specimens respectively.Principal component analysis(PCA)was employed to explore their variation characteristics and key growth indicators at different growth stages.By integrating correlation analysis and path analysis,the study investigated the influence degrees of morphological traits on body mass of M.peelii at different growth periods,aiming to clarify the magnitudes of direct and indirect effects of these morphological traits on body mass.Furthermore,through stepwise regression analysis,multiple regression equation models were constructed to depict the quantitative relationships between morphological traits and body mass of M.peelii at the three different monthly ages.The results showed that the correlations between morphological traits and body mass of M.peelii at different ages were different,and only the correlation coefficients of each morphological trait of M.peelii at 4 months of age reached a significant level.With the extension of the breeding cycle,the number of trait indexes with insignificant effects of morphological traits on body mass increased.The first principal component of 4-month-old and 12-month-old M.peelii pointed to the growth and development of body length.The first principal component of 24-month-old M.peelii pointed to full-length related growth and development indicators.Path analysis and multiple regression analysis indicated that the main morphological traits affecting the body mass of 4-month-old M.peelii were body length(X2),eye diameter(X7)and caudal peduncle depth(X9);body length(X2),body depth(X3)and caudal peduncle depth(X9)for 12-month-old M.peelii;eye diameter(X7)and caudal peduncle depth(X9)for 24-month-old M.peelii.The greatest direct effect of morphological traits for 4-month-old and 12-month-old M.peelii were body length(0.676 and 0.456 respectively);and caudal peduncle depth for 24-month-old M.peelii(0.741).The regression equations of morphological traits on body mass at three different ages were as follows:Y4-month-old=-1.568+0.553X2+2.669X9-1.237X7(P<0.01);Y12-month-old=-158.027+8.862X2+15.265X3+29.217X9(P<0.01);Y24-month-old=-38.603+271.616X9-132.718X7(P<0.01).The study shows that the influence degrees of morphological traits on body mass of M.peelii at different growth stages are different.Body length should be regarded as the main trait for selection and breeding of 4-month-old and 12-month-old M.peelii,while the total determination coefficient of morphological traits on body mass of 24-month-old M.peelii is<0.85,there are differences between the phenotypic trait indexes extracted from the first principal component and the main trait indexes obtained by path analysis,indicating that there are other unincluded morphological traits having significant impacts on body mass,and further in-depth research is needed.关键词
