Research progress on wood ray structure characteristics and analysis methods

Abstract
Wood rays,as an important component of radial xylem tissue in trees,are present in nearly all woody plant species.They play a crucial role in the radial and lateral transport of nutrients,water,and photosynthetic products during tree growth.Additionally,wood rays significantly affect the physical and mechanical properties of wood,as well as its processing and utilization.Till now,structural straits of wood rays have not been revealed clearly,because the low wood ray proportion,small cell sizes,and a long period of secondary wall formation make the study of wood rays complicated.Furthermore,problems in scientific understanding of wood ray structure characteristics also become obstacles and decelerate the progresses of scientific research about the influence of wood rays on tree growth,as well as wood ray structure-property relations.Hence,in this review,we endeavor to bridge this knowledge gap by providing a comprehensive overview of wood ray structural characteristics.We summarized the structural characteristics of wood rays at different levels,including microstructure,ultrastructure,and chemical structural characteristics.Then,the influences of species,cambial age,developmental stage,and contact with adjacent cells on the wood ray structure characteristics were discussed.Besides,we briefly reviewed the changes in wood ray structures at the levels of species,organs,growth rings and cell types.This multi-level analysis offers valuable insights into the adaptation of wood rays with different growth conditions and environmental factors.In addition,the impacts of wood ray structural characteristics on tree growth were revealed.Additionally,we also provided information about the influences of wood ray structural characteristics on wood physical and mechanical properties,for instance mechanical property,shrinkage and swelling,dimensional stability,acoustic performance,degradation resistance,and permeability.Moreover,the analysis methods and applicable scope for wood ray microstructure,ultrastructure,and chemical structural characteristics were introduced and compared.Finally,three prospects for future development of wood ray structure characteristics were proposed based on current problems and shortcomings.Firstly,it is essential to innovate and refine the analysis methodology for examining the structural characteristics of wood rays,which could promote the precise and comprehensive characterizations of wood ray structures.Secondly,theoretical research on wood ray structure was carried out.This research aimed at integrating insights from diverse disciplines,creating a unifying framework to better understanding the roles and functions of wood rays.Thirdly,a data platform was established to capture the multi-level structural characteristics of wood rays and the relationships between wood structure and properties.This platform provides a theoretical and scientific foundation for understanding tree growth and function,facilitating wood identification,and promoting the high-value utilization of wood.关键词
