Abstract

As the widespread mutualistic symbionts which facilitate the uptake of soil nitrogen(N)in exchange for carbon with the host plants in natural soils,arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)play an important role in soil N cycle and regulation of N loss(nitrous oxide emissions and N leaching).However,compared with the well-known roles of AMF in plant nutrient acquisition and environmental stress,the understanding of AMF regulating soil N loss is still very limited.This article reviews the effects and mechanisms of AMF on soil nitrous oxide(N2O)emissions and N leaching.Most studies showed that AMF could reduces soil N2O emissions and N leaching,while a few studies have found that AMF increases or has no effect on soil N2O emissions and N leaching.Overall,AMF reduced soil N2O emissions with an average of 25%and inorganic nitrogen leaching with 21%.There are three main ways for AMF to reduce soil N2O emissions and N leaching.AMF increases N fixation by promoting plant biomass and soil microbial biomass,which reduced soil inorganic N and thus soil N2O emissions and N leaching.AMF reduces soil N2O emissions and N leaching by altering the abiotic soil environment(reducing soil moisture and promoting the formation of soil aggregates).In reducing soil N2O emissions,AMF will inhibit the associated microbial communities involved in the production of N2O by nitrification(AOA and AOB)and denitrification(nirS and nirK),and/or promote the consumption of N2O(nosZ)related microbial communities.In the process of reducing N leaching,AMF can effectively reduce the volume of leachate by increasing the stomatal conductance and transpiration of plants.Soil nutrients,soil types and plant species composition are the influencing factors for AMF to regulate soil N2O emissions and N leaching.Excessive fertilization will destroy the symbiotic relationship between AMF and host plants,and further increase the risk of soil N loss.In the context of increasing global N deposition,promoting the establishment of a good symbiotic relationship between AMF and plants can be used as a strategy to reduce soil nutrient loss,especially in agricultural ecosystems.
