Effects of Different Pruning and Fruit-Setting Methods on the Development of Melon Plants and Fruits

Abstract
In order to explore suitable pruning and fruit-setting methods for facility-grown melons,thereby further enhancing plant growth and improving the yield and quality of marketable fruits,this study employed thin-skinned melon varieties Tianmei 55 and Huale,and thick-skinned melon varieties Tianxiang 1 and Meiwang 6 as experimental materials.By comparing two pruning treatments of single vine pruning with single pruning and double pruning to explore the effects on the growth dynamics,flowering time,fruit yield,appearance,and internal quality of melons.The experimental results revealed distinct effects of the two treatments on thin-skinned and thick-skinned melons.For thick-skinned melons,the one-time pinching treatment resulted in stronger plant growth,shorter later-al fruit-bearing branches,flowering time advanced by 1-2 days,fruit maturity period advanced by 2-3 days,and a 15%-16%in-crease in fruit yield compared to the two-time pinching treatment.For thin-skinned melons,the two-time pinching treatment led to a slight decrease in stem diameter but a significant improvement in upward elongation speed,a slight increase in the length of lateral fruit-bearing branches,flowering time advanced by 5 days,fruit maturity period advanced by 1 day,and no significant difference in fruit yield.In terms of fruit quality,neither treatment had a significant impact on the fruit shape index or central sugar content of the four melon varieties.In conclusion,the study suggests that thick-skinned melons are more suitable for single-vine pruning with one-time pinching(fruit-setting on primary lateral vines),which promotes robust plant growth,increases fruit yield,and ensures fruit qual-ity.Thin-skinned melons are more suitable for single-vine pruning with two-time pinching(fruit-setting on secondary lateral vines),which promotes upward development,accelerates vine elongation,advances flowering at fixed nodes,ensures relatively high fruit yield,and allows for earlier harvest and market availability.关键词
