Aboveground and Belowground Species Richness and Similarity along Elevation Gradients in Alpine Meadows of Tangjiahe Nature Reserve

摘要

Abstract

In this study,six elevation gradients(2750±50 m,2850±50 m,2950±50 m,3050±50 m,3150±50 m,>3200 m)were established on alpine meadows across three mountains.Species count,richness,and density of aboveground vegetation,seed rain,seed bank,and belowground bud bank,as well as the correlation between habitat factors and species indicators,were analyzed to investigate varia-tion in species richness and similarity of above and belowground plant communities alone elevation gradi-ents.The results showed that:1)Species count and richness of aboveground vegetation,seed rain,seed bank,and underground bud bank were significantly affected by the altitude(P<0.01).The altitude had significantly negative correlation with species richness of aboveground vegetation,seed rain,seed bank,and underground bud bank(P<0.05).2)The density of aboveground vegetation,seed rain,seed bank,and underground bud bank were significantly affected by altitude gradients(P<0.01).The density of seed rain and seed bank were negatively correlated with altitude,while the density of underground bud bank was positively correlated with altitude(P<0.05).3)Microhabitat heterogeneity driven by elevation gradients significantly affected species richness and density in aboveground and belowground(P<0.05).The spe-cies richness of aboveground vegetation and seed bank were negatively correlated with soil available nitro-gen content.Positive correlations were found in species richness and density of underground bud bank with soil available nitrogen content,and in species richness of seed rain and seed bank with aboveground vegeta-tion(P<0.05).4)Aboveground and belowground species similarity exhibited highly significant influence(P<0.01).The species similarity among aboveground vegetation,underground bud bank,and seed bank rose with the increase of altitude,whereas the species similarity between aboveground vegetation and seed rain decreased.5)An altitude of 3000 meters was the vital altitude threshold for the variation in the species count,richness,density,and similarity of aboveground and belowground vegetation.Elevation gradients directly regulated seed rain dynamic and soil seed bank properties,while aboveground vegetation structure and underground bud bank traits were regulated through cascading effects.In summary,aboveground and underground vegetation in alpine meadows were characterized with low species count and richness and high species similarity.In contrast,the density of seed rain,seed bank,and underground bud bank were rela-tively high.This can provide a sustainable seed source foundation for vegetation regeneration and ecologi-cal stability of alpine meadows in the mountain forest system.
