Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different fertilization techniques on soil nutrient content and alfalfa yield and nutritional quality,and to identify fertilization techniques that are suitable for the rain-fed region of north-western China.The overall effect of fertilization techniques on the growth and nutritional quality of alfalfa,as well as on soil fertility,was investigated through application of different fertilizers by randomized block trial.This included applications of organic and chemical fertilizers without rhizobium seed dressing(M+NR),chemical fertilizers without rhizobium seed dressing(M+NR+NF),a microbial agent plus Rhizobium seed dressing(M+W),plant growth promoting rhizobacteria plus Rhizobium seed dressing(M+P),Trichoderma,Bacillus subtilis,and Rhizobium seed dressing(M+T+K),bentonite plus Rhizobium seed dressing(M+S),a water retaining agent plus Rhizobium seed dressing(M+A),foliar fertilizers plus Rhizobium seed dressing[molybdenum(M+Mo),and boron fertilizers(M+B)].The results showed that applying different fertilizers had no significant effect on plant growth and nutritional quality(P>0.05).The alfalfa plants treated with different fertilizers were significantly promoted in soil nutrients contents.Under the soil layer at a depth of 0-20 cm,boron foliar fertilizer application(M+B)significantly increased the contents of soil total phosphorus and available phosphorus(P<0.05).Microbial agent(M+W)and bentonite clay(M+S)significantly increased soil nitrate nitrogen content(P<0.05).Boron foliar fertilizer application(M+B)significantly increased the contents of soil nitrate nitrogen and available phosphorus under the soil layer at a depth of 40-50 cm(P<0.05).The top three ranking of different fertilization techniques through grey correlation evaluation was:M+B>M+W>M+S.This suggests that boron foliar fertilizer application is the best fertilization techniques screened.This study provides theoretical support for exploration of optimized alfalfa cultivation patterns in the rain-fed agriculture areas of north-west China.
