Abstract

This study tested the effects of nutrient addition on biomass allocation and root functional traits of four grasses(Lolium perenne,Bromus inermis,Psathyrostachys juncea,and Elymus nutans)in a greenhouse experiment.The aboveground biomass of the four grasses significantly increased under nitrogen and phosphorus addition.The above ground biomass of E.nutans and L.perenne were highest at the addition rate of 10 and 0.8 g·m-2 nitrogen and phosphorus,respectively,and the above-ground biomass of B.inermis and P.juncea were highest at the addition rate of 20 and 1.6 g·m-2 nitrogen and phosphorus,respectively.Our results also showed that the biomass allocation of the four grasses affected nutrient addition.The positive effects of nutrient addition on the aboveground biomass of L.perenne were greater than those on the belowground biomass;however,the pattern of nutrient addition on the biomass allocation of B.inermis was the opposite.In addition,the root length,total surface area,and tip number of P.juncea significantly increased with nutrient addition,but those of L.perenne decreased.Moreover,our results revealed that the aboveground phosphorus content of the four grass species increased with nutrient addition.Overall,the responses of biomass allocation,root functional traits,and nutrient absorption to nutrient addition varied among the species.
