Cognitive mechanism of safety education models affecting performance of construction practitioners in hazard identification

Abstract
Safety hazards are a major cause of frequent accidents in the construction industry.Although safety education has been widely adopted to enhance the hazard recognition ability of construction personnel,its effectiveness varies considerably across different education modes and individual characteristics.The study proposed a cross-level theoretical model of safety education mode-cognitive mechanism-hazard recognition performance.Two education modes,video-based instruction and interactive scenario simulation,were designed.Electroencephalography experiments using event-related potentials(ERP)were conducted on construction personnel with different levels of work experience,including both on-site workers and civil engineering students.Training engagement,ERP amplitude and latency,hazard recognition accuracy,and reaction time were compared to examine how education modes influence hazard recognition performance and how work experience moderates this relationship.The results demonstrate that high-engagement scenario simulation can reduce extraneous cognitive load,increase germane load,and improve cognitive resource allocation.Thereby it can enhance hazard recognition performance.Furthermore,group-specific differences are observed.The experienced workers can perform better under video-based instruction,whereas the inexperienced students can benefit more significantly from scenario simulation.The study reveals the cognitive mechanisms through which safety education modes affect hazard recognition performance and verifies the moderating role of work experience.It also highlights the differentiated impacts of education modes on distinct groups.The results can provide theoretical evidence for managers to optimize worker training,continuing education,and retraining,while also offering empirical support for the pre-placement safety education of civil engineering students as future construction personnel.Ultimately,this study contributes to the development of a long-term,adaptive safety education system that strengthens school-enterprise collaboration and ensures sustainable workforce preparedness.关键词
