Effects of Different Biochar Materials on Growth and Physiology of Peanut

Abstract
To investigate the effects of different biochar materials on the growth and physiology of peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.),randomized block-designed pot and field experiments were carried out with the peanut variety'Xianghua 522'.The peanut plants were subjected to five treatments:no biochar addition(CK),Miscanthus lutarioriparius straw biochar(MS),rice husk biochar(RH),bamboo biochar(BM),and sludge biochar(SS).The functional leaf SPAD values,malondialdehyde(MDA)content,root activity,plant height,branch number,and field yield were measured during flowering,acicula forming,and pod setting stages.The results showed that the SS treatment achieved the highest SPAD value(46.5)at the flowering stage,while other treatments exhibited significantly lower values.During growth,SPAD values gradually decreased in SS and CK treatments but increased in other treatments.Root activity declined in SS and CK treatments but rose in other treatments.The MDA content increased across all treatments,with RH and BM showing smaller increases than CK,MS,and SS.Biochar-treated plants exhibited shorter plants but more branches than CK.All biochar treatments outperformed CK in yield,with MS yielding the highest(5 482.5 kg/hm2,23.0%increase compared with CK)and SS yielding the lowest(4 689 kg/hm2,5.2%increase compared with CK).Polynomial correlations were observed between peanut yield and physiological indicators at the pod setting stage in the case of biochar application,which indicated that the effective application of biochar was a key approach to improving the quality,yield,and economic benefit of peanut.In conclusion,among the four biochar materials,MS,RH,and BM demonstrated satisfactory performance,while SS showcased poorer performance.关键词
