Abstract

Polycarbonate(PC),a widely used engineering plastic,is valued for its excellent overall proper-ties.However,despite possessing intrinsic flame retardancy to some extent,PC exhibits flaming melt drip-ping and releases significant amounts of smoke and heat during combustion.These limitations hinder its appli-cation in high-end fields where stringent flame retardancy is required.Incorporating additive flame retardants into the polymer matrix effectively enhances flame resistance but often compromises mechanical properties.Here,we reported a novel flame-retardant PC achieved through the synergistic blending of sulfonate mono-mer(SK)and polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS).This approach leverages the high flame-retardant efficiency of SK and the exceptional flexibility of PDMS to improve flame resistance while preserving mechanical integrity.The resulting PC/PDMS/SK blend successfully achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating and exhibited a high limiting oxygen index(LOI)of 29.6%.Moreover,cone calorimetry tests demonstrated a significant reduction in heat and smoke release.Notably,PC/PDMS/SK maintained superior mechanical strength,highlighting its excel-lent performance.These findings present a promising strategy for the development of high-performance flame-retardant polycarbonates,addressing the critical trade-off between flame resistance and mechanical properties.
