摘要

Abstract

Horsetail faults are typical structures within the tip damage zones of strike-slip faults and serve as important criteria for identifying strike-slip faults on planar maps.They are widely developed in various geological environments,especially in small-scale strike-slip fault systems within cratonic interiors.Currently,there is still controversy regarding the nature of horsetail faults,with an unclear understanding of their specific development process and the controlling factors of their formation and evolution.The lack of physical simulation experimental results as supporting evidence hinders fault identification,correlation analysis,sequence analysis and the study of tectonic background restoration in certain research areas.Using quartz sand as the material,a physical simulation study was conducted on the horsetail fault to clarify its properties,reconstruct its development process,and analyze the controlling factors for its formation and evolution.Horsetail faults can exhibit both extensional and compressional characteristics and their development occurs as strike-slip faults progress from wall damage zones to tip damage zones.Main controlling factors include fault displacement,lateral stress,caprock thickness and non-penetrating degree.
