Study on the Medication Patterns of National Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine TANG Youzhi in the Treatment of Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the medication patterns of National Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine TANG Youzhi in the treatment of dry age-related macular degeneration(AMD)based on data mining using the TCM Inheritance Support System.METHODS Clinical records of dry AMD patients treated by TANG Youzhi at Eye Hospital,China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences,between January 2003 and January 2015 were collected.Patient demographics,diagnoses,prescriptions,dosage,and frequency were extracted and entered into an Excel database.After standardizing the nomenclature of Chinese materia medica,data were analyzed using the data mining module of the TCM Inheritance Support System V3.5,including drug properties,frequency statistics,and association rule analysis.RESULTS(1)Frequency analysis:A total of 71 medical cases were included,involving 95 Chinese materia medica with 937 cumulative uses.The top five were Astragali radix(69 times,7.36%),Lycii fructus(63 times,6.72%),Salviae miltiorrhizae radix et rhizoma(57 times,6.08%),Chuanxiong rhizoma(40 times,4.27%),and Cuscutae semen(37 times,3.95%).(2)Properties and meridian tropism:Among the Four Qi,warm was most common(359 times,38.31%);Among the Five Flavors,sweet predominated(578 times,44.26%);Liver meridian was most frequently targeted(682 times,32.18%).(3)Therapeutic efficacy:A total of eight categories of therapeutic efficacy appeared more than 20 times,with the top five being tonifying(354 times,37.78%),blood-activating and stasis-resolving(162 times,17.29%),heat-clearing(98 times,10.46%),hemostatic(85 times,9.07%),and astringent(73 times,7.79%).(4)Association rule analysis:The top three associations were Rubus chingii fructus-Lycii fructus,Salviae miltiorrhizae radix et rhizoma-Astragali radix,and Lycii fructus,Salviae miltiorrhizae radix et rhizoma-Astragali radix.(5)Cluster analysis:Four core herb combinations were identified,with Astragali radix,Salviae miltiorrhizae radix et rhizoma,and Lycii fructus as the core medicines.CONCLUSIONS TANG Youzhi's treatment of dry AMD was primarily based on the TCM principle of liver and kidney deficiency,frequently guided by"Qi and Blood theory".His fundamental therapeutic method was"tonifying liver and kidney,regulating Qi and blood".He was skilled in employing raw Astragali radix to tonify Qi and raise Yang,promoting the upward delivery of medicine,and often prescribed Salviae miltiorrhizae radix et rhizoma and Lycii fructus,with synergistic medicines combinations to achieve the effects of nourishing liver and kidney,brightening the eyes,regulating Qi,and promoting blood circulation.关键词
