Rethinking the Relationship between Labor and Politics:A Study Based on Hardt and Negri's Critique of Arendt

Abstract
Starting from Marx's distinction between productive and unproductive labor,Arendt and Hardt&Negri respectively developed the concept of labor critically.Arendt argues that Marx's concept of labor is ambiguous,thus separating labor(as toil)and work(as fabrication)from it to critique technological thinking.She further proposes a primordial politics of pure action,re-emphasizing human plurality to reconstruct the public sphere.However,due to a lack of socio-historical perspective,the intrinsi c connection between labor and politics cannot be fully revealed.Unlike Arendt's abstract conceptual clarification,Hardt and Negri,grounded in the reality of capitalist production,reconstruct Marx's mental labor and unproductive labor into the concept of biopolitical labor.They explore the increasingly close relationship between labor(and its subjects)and politics through the extension of general intellect into living labor.Both theories of labor,while emphasizing difference and common action,reveal the malpractice of modern society.They shed light on rethinking the relationship between labor and politics:digital technology has drastically changed the forms of labor and political participation.The forms of human life,communication,cooperation,and the development of intellect have become equally important for both labor and politics,and their relationship has entered a more complex domain.Thus only by subjects increasingly utilizing their own cognitive abilities and social knowledge to participate in the construction of community can there be a possibility of resisting the crisis of modernity.关键词
