Research progress on root lifespan

Abstract
Root lifespan is a pivotal factor influencing nutrient cycling and water utilization in ecosystems.It also functions as a critical trait that underpins the strategies of root resource acquisition and protection,thereby profoundly affecting plant growth,productivity,and competitiveness.Despite extensive research over decades,the inherent complexity of root lifespan means that our understanding remains incomplete and requires further expansion.This review aims to provide a thorough and systematic evaluation of the advancements in root lifespan research during the past three decades.We started by summarizing the methodologies employed to quantify root lifespan,which constitute the cornerstone of this field.Subsequently,we explord the primary factors shaping root lifespan,including root morphology,environmental conditions,resource constraints,and shoot-root coordinated regulation.Lastly,we reviewed and summarized the principal approaches for modulating root lifespan.By these insights,this review not only contributes to a comprehensive understanding of root lifespan but also offers guidance and inspiration for future research directions and methodological innovations in this domain.关键词
