Abstract

[Objective]To investigate the effects of shading in different stages on cotton growth and yield in the Yellow River Basin area.[Method]Cotton field experiments were carried out from 2020 to 2021 in the Yellow River beach area of Zhongmu County using a randomized complete blocks design.The shading stages were applied at the initial flowering,peak boll setting,initial boll opening,and across all three stages(three stages shading),with 78%shading for 15 days.A non-shading treatment was used as the control(CK).The effects of shading in different stages on main agronomic characters and yield components of cotton were studied.[Result]Compared with CK,shading at different stages significantly reduced the SPAD values of leaf during the flowering and boll setting stage.The greatest reduction occurred under three stage shading,followed by shading in initial flowering and peak boll setting stages,and shading in initial boll opening had the least effect.The dry matter weight of total plant and boll treated with shading decreased significantly,but had little effect on leaves.Among them,three stages and peak boll setting stages had greater influences,while initial flowering and ini-tial boll opening stages had smaller effects.The number of"four seasonal bolls"with shading in initial flowering stage and three stages were reduced,and the number of high-quality bolls with shading in peak boll setting stage was decreased by 37.48%.The ratio of bolls setting on the 6th~10th fruit branches increased under shading in initial flowering and three stages,while shading in peak boll se-tting and initial boll opening stage showed the opposite characteristics.But shading had no significant effect on boll setting ratio at different fruit nodes.Compared with CK,the total boll number and boll weight decreased by 12.09%~35.71%and 4.86%~23.59%,respectively,under different shading treatments.Cotton lint yield decreased significantly by 30.86%,34.44%,18.77%and 51.57%under shading at the initial flowering,peak boll setting,initial boll opening,and three stages,respec-tively.All differences were statistically significant.[Conclusion]The cotton yield with shading in di-fferent stages demonstrated an order of CK>early boll-opening>initial flowering>peak boll setting>three stages.The reduction in cotton yield was mainly attributable to decreases in SPAD value of cotton leaves,dry matter weight of total plant and bolls,high-quality boll number and boll weight.
