On Justification of Intergenerational Responsibility from the Perspective of Vulnerability
摘要
Abstract
The justification of intergenerational responsibility is an important issue in contemporary applied ethics.Intuitively,we believe that we ought to be responsible for future generations;however,in theory,this responsibility is challenged by dilemmas such as the indeterminacy of the identity of future persons,the absence of reciprocal relationships,and the rupture of emotional bonds.At the same time,traditional moral theories often rely on the presupposition that"future generations will necessarily exist",and thus find it difficult to fully justify the fundamental responsibility of ensuring the long-term continuation of humankind.In fact,the perspective of vulnerability can provide a solid foundation for the justification of intergenerational responsibility.The so-called vulnerability does not merely refer to the fragility of life itself;it also concerns the fragility of the value systems upon which human civilization depends,as well as the instability that moral norms exhibit in contemporary society.Vulnerability reveals that our present way of life,value systems,and moral norms depend on future generations of humanity—even on those far distant in time.Only by acknowledging and embracing our own vulnerability can we truly understand the efforts humanity has made to overcome it,and thereby justify intergenerational responsibility.Meanwhile,the perspective of vulnerability reminds us to remain prudent and restrained in the face of risks in areas such as the environment and technology,so as to avoid placing humanity in a perilous gamble.关键词
