Abstract

Fire spotting ignition by embers becomes a potential mechanism for the spread of wildfires and wildland urban interface(WUI)fires.Despite the increasing frequency in wildfires and WUI fires,there has been little research on the multiple physicochemi-cal processes involved in ember combustion.In this study,a two-dimensional(2-D)computational model was proposed to study the glowing combustion of a wooden ember.A global char oxidation reaction was used to represent the glowing combustion of the ember.First a parametric study was applied to identify parameters that contributed most to the glowing ember.Then,the model was compared to the experiments in terms of thermal response of a non-reacting substrate when exposed to a hot ember.A sensitivity ranking shows that the porosity,heat of reaction,and oxygen concentration are the most influential parameters on hot ember combustion that is mostly diffusion-controlled rather than kinetic-controlled.Thus,given the ember diversities in spotting fire,modelers should pay more atten-tion to the difference in the physical properties instead of kinetics between ember species.This study offers a substantial step forward in further modelling the ignition by embers.
