Niche analysis of the dominant species of zooplankton community during the winter in eight major estuaries of the Pearl River

Abstract

To better understand the ecological niche of dominant zooplankton species and their relationships with environmental factors in the Pearl River estuary during winter,eight sampling sites were established across the eight major estuaries from December 2019 to January 2020.A total of 47 species from five major zooplankton groups were identified,including seven dominant species(Y>0.01).Among them,Paracalanus parvus exhibited the widest niche breadth,while Brachionus calyciflorus had the narrowest.The niche overlap among dominant species ranged from 0.00 to 0.84.The lowest overlap was observed between Brachionus calyciflorus and Sinocalanus tenellus,Sinocalanus solstitialis and Pseudodiaptomus poplesia,whereas the highest was found between Paracalanus parvus and Pseudodiaptomus poplesia.The total ecological response rates of the dominant species was negative,indicating a declining stage of zooplankton communities.Redundancy analysis(RDA)showed that Axis 1 and Axis 2 together explained 100%of the species variation,with reactive phosphate identified as a significant explanatory factor.In conclusion,Paracalanus parvus demonstrated strong adaptability and a broad ecological niche.The low niche overlap of Brachionus calyciflorus suggests weak interspecific competition.The overall zooplankton community appears to be in the early stage of ecological succession,showing a trend of forward succession.A dynamic equilibrium between dominant species and the environment has not yet been established,indicating that the dominant species are still developing.Total organic carbon and nitrite were identified as the key environmental factors influencing the distribution and niche characteristics of dominant zooplankton species in the Pearl River estuary.
