Evolution characteristics and driving factors of wetlands in Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve

Abstract

Wetland data of the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve(YRDNNR)were retrieved by means of object-oriented and visual interpretation classification methods from Landsat series photographs taken in 1991,2001,2011 and 2021.Subsequently,wetland resource characteristics were studied through spatial analysis and a dynamic degree model,to investigate geographic and temporal variability.Additionally,the study highlighted the factors driving wetland changes.(1)The YRDNNR wetland's total area increased from 839.88 km2 to 964.50 km2 between 1991 and 2021,exhibiting a dynamic rate of 0.50%.The natural wetland space decreased from 834.15 km2 to 747.77 km2,displaying a dynamic rate of-0.35%.(2)The Dawenliu management station's natural wetland area grew by 116.91 km2,while the Yiqian'er and Yellow River estuary management stations'natural wetland areas decreased by 90.13 km2 and 33.72 km2,respectively,between 1991 and 2021.The varying dynamic degrees were 1.08%,-0.51%,and 0.37%,respectively.The distribution and intensity of change in wetland types were influenced by conditions of both rivers and seas,resulting in consequences that vary across different land types.(3)Due to alterations in water and sediment flow,human interventions and natural wetland development,a total of 166.49 km2 of wetlands in YRDNNR were transformed into non-wetlands between 1991 and 2021.Natural wetlands constituted 99.95%,primarily situated in the northern part of Yiqian'er and the southwestern part of Dawenliu,which were converted from tidal flats,salt marshes,and herbaceous marshes.A total of 291.12 km2 of non-wetlands underwent conversion to became wetlands,with 61.04%being transformed into natural wetlands.The majorities of these were found in the northeast of the Yellow River Estuary and were predominantly composed of salt marsh wetlands,tidal flats,and shrub wetlands.
