How Generative Artificial Intelligence Facilitates the Cultivation of Learners' Higher-Order Thinking Skills—A Systematic Review of 68 Empirical Studies

Abstract

Understanding how generative artificial intelligence(GenAI)supports the development of learners'higher-order thinking skills(HOTS)is essential for planning talent development in the intelligent era and advancing the integrated reform of educa-tion,science,and technology.Following PRISMA guidelines,we conducted a systematic review of 68 empirical studies from domestic and international contexts that examined GenAI's effects on HOTS.Using an analytical framework comprising cultivation types,mod-els,and effects,we addressed three questions:which HOTS GenAI can foster,how they are cultivated,and with what outcomes.Re-sults showed that(a)the studies under review primarily targets six learning scenarios(e.g.,writing,programming,and oral communica-tion)across three platforms,with evidence that GenAI can foster seven categories of HOTS;(b)GenAI is commonly positioned as a teaching assistant or learning companion,yielding four human-AI collaborative learning models(including structured task-driven and open-ended inquiry activities),yet current work lacks endogenous theoretical grounding and coherent practical application;and(c)evidence on GenAI's impact on creative thinking is mixed,while well-defined human-AI collaboration patterns appear necessary,and usage duration functions as an important moderating factor.Based on these results,we recommend integrating advanced learning analytics to uncover mechanisms of HOTS development,designing generative human-AI collaborative teaching and learning models,and leveraging multimodal learning process data to trace the development of creative thinking.These recommendations provide evi-dence-based guidance for researchers and educators engaged in AI-enhanced pedagogical innovation.
