Field mulching techniques:Evolution,advances,and future perspectives

Abstract
As an important technology for soil cultivation,field mulching has played a significant role in enhancing crop productivity and ensuring food security,making outstanding contributions to human societal development.This paper reviews the innovation and evolution of field mulching techniques,which has gradually developed from early practices such as fine soil mulching,trampling compaction,harrowing for moisture retention,and dry grass mulching,to the gradual development of straw mulching,living grass mulching,gravel mulching,and finally modern plastic film and greenhouse covering technologies.It demonstrates that plastic film and greenhouse covering have become the most efficient covering methods today due to their remarkable effects on temperature increase and moisture retention,greatly boosting agricultural productivity.However,the soil residual pollution caused by plastic film mulching and the resulting microplastic ecological crisis have become the main problems facing global substainable agricultural development.In this context,soil film mulching offers an effective technical approach,and exhibits certain advantages in the synergistic regulation of soil water,heat,and nutrients,as well as in controlling plastic film pollution.The future development of field mulching technology will deeply integrate multidisciplinary theories and methods from physics,chemistry,ecology,and engineering.It is expected to achieve development in areas such as cover function optimization,material innovation,digital management,intelligent regulation,and farmland coverage theory system,upgrading towards high-quality,high-efficiency,low-carbon,and intelligent directions,forming a systematic sustainable agricultural solution,and providing stronger support for the future green development of agriculture,in order to better address multiple challenges such as intensifying global climate change,population growth,and the scarcity of arable land resources.关键词
