Abstract

In recent years,the frequency and intensity of late spring coldness(LSC)have been on the rise,posing a significant constraint on the high yield and quality of wheat(Triticum aestivum L.).To comprehensively understand the damage mechanisms and control measures of LSC on wheat production,relevant literature published from 2000 to 2024 were retrieved from the CNKI and Web of Science databases by taking such as"wheat","Triticum aestivum L.","low temperature","late spring coldness","cold damage",and"spring frost"as keywords.The review focused on the impacts of LSC on wheat growth,yield,and quality,as well as the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying wheat responses to LSC and integrated mitigation approaches.The results indicate that:The jointing to booting stage is the most sensitive period to low temperatures,during which wheat is highly vulnerable to LSC damage.LSC can cause impeded wheat plant growth and development,delayed spikelet differentiation,reduced yield,and deteriorated grain quality,including impaired protein quality and disrupted starch biosynthesis.The physiological mechanisms of LSC damage involve photosynthetic inhibition,cell membrane damage,reactive oxygen species accumulation,and hormonal imbalance.Wheat plants respond to LSC through antioxidant defense,osmotic regulation,and signal transduction pathways.Mitigation strategies,such as marker-assisted breeding,optimized cultivation practices,and the application of exogenous substance,have proven effective in alleviating LSC damage.Future research should emphasize biotechnological approaches to enhance LSC resilience in wheat.We recommend interdisciplinary collaboration to develop precise early-warning systems and intelligent mitigation technologies,thereby addressing the challenges posed by climate change to sustainable wheat production.
