Abstract

To have a deep understanding of the genetic mechanisms and adaptive significance of uniparental dominance in intergeneric and interfamilial hybrid offspring of angiosperms,relevant studies were retrieved and analyzed.The variation characteristics,genetic mechanisms,and adaptive significance of distant hybridization offspring were sorted out.The results showed that:1)The phenotypes of intergeneric and interfamilial hybrid offspring significantly bias toward one parent,while characteristics of the other recessive parent are either minimally expressed or not expressed at all,exhibiting uniparental dominance.This differs from classical genetic variation patterns observed in closely related hybridization,demonstrating non-Mendelian inheritance patterns.2)Uniparental dominance is regulated at three levels,i.e.,asymmetric chromosome elimination during early zygotic development;biased gene expression,systematic loss of recessive parent chromosomes or fragments and transcriptional silencing and differential in epigenetic modifications.3)Uniparental dominance represents an adaptive compatibility strategy for address genetic incompatibility between distant hybrid parents.The genetic material of the dominant parent plays a leading role in shaping offspring development,while the genetic material of the recessive parent is eliminated or suppressed.The harmonizes genetic incompatibility arising from distant parental interactions,avoiding hybrid conflicts that leads to sterility and lethality,thereby achieving relative genomic stability and maintaining normal development of offspring.Meanwhile,the retention of some exotic genes provides a potential gene pool for functional innovation.Systematic analysis of uniparental dominance in distant hybrid offspring helps to understand the unique variation patterns in intergeneric and interfamilial hybrids,and provides a theoretical basis for improving the efficiency of distant hybridization breeding.
