Abstract

Intelligent transformation is the main direction for the manufacturing industry to reshape its competitive advantage and pro-vide a key driving force for green and low-carbon development.However,it remains controversial whether and how manufacturing enter-prises can achieve coordinated development of intelligent and low-carbon transformation.This study used China's A-share listed manu-facturing enterprises as the research object to investigate the effects and mechanisms of intelligent transformation on carbon emissions of manufacturing enterprises.The findings were as follows:① In general,the impact of intelligent transformation on corporate carbon emissions showed an inverted U-shaped pattern of increasing first and then decreasing,i.e.,there was a"green paradox"phenomenon in the early stage of intelligent transformation and a"dual synergy"effect in the later stage.This conclusion held after a series of robust-ness checks,such as testing for endogeneity,replacing the core explanatory variables,and ruling out competing explanations.② Mecha-nism test found that in the early stage,intelligent transformation mainly increased corporate carbon emissions through scale expansion effect and factor mismatch effect;in the later stage,it generated incentives of increased R&D investment and sustained green innovation and attracted more highly skilled labor,thereby inhibiting corporate carbon emissions through technological innovation incentives and optimized skill structures.③ The inverted U-shaped relationship between intelligent transformation and carbon emissions was more prominent in high-tech enterprises and heavily polluting enterprises.Moreover,the nonlinear impact of intelligent transformation on car-bon emissions was stronger for enterprises with high supply chain concentration,and such could achieve the"dual synergy"effect earli-er.④ The transformation rate of corporate green innovation,technology diffusion,and supply chain innovation could effectively moder-ate the effect of intelligent transformation on corporate carbon emissions,accelerating and surpassing the inflection point earlier,there-by facilitating the synergistic transformation towards intelligent and low-carbon development.Based on these conclusions,this study proposes the following policy recommendations:① Accelerate the introduction of multi-level and systematic policies to guide and sup-port corporate intelligent transformation;② Guide scale expansion to go green and avoid high-carbon path dependency;③ Optimize the factor allocation structure and enhance resource-use efficiency;④ Establish an industry-university-research cooperation platform to optimize the labor skill structure;⑤ Improve policy incentive mechanisms to help enterprises innovate and transform their achieve-ments;⑥ Promote supply chain integration and optimization and strengthen collaborative supply chain innovation.While strengthening the low-carbon development enabled by intelligent transformation in traditional manufacturing industry,it remains necessary to enhance sustainable green innovation capacity and promote the deep integration of low-carbon development and intelligent transformation.By promoting green innovation transformation and supply chain innovation,a more low-carbon intelligent transformation ecosystem can be built to help achieve a coordinated improvement and dynamic balance between economic and ecological benefits.
