Abstract

To understand the tick species and the tick-borne pathogens they carry in the port areas of Inner Mongolia along the China-Mongolia border,this study collected 1 470 free-living ticks from eight port regions between 2023 and 2024.Tick species were identified based on morphological characteristics,and molecular detection of Anaplasmataceae and Piroplasm species was conducted using 23S rRNA and 18S rRNA gene markers,respectively.The collected hard ticks belonged to 4 genera and 7 species,listed by decreasing abundance as follows:Dermacentor nuttalli,Ixodes persulcatus,Hyalomma asiaticum,Hyalomma rufipes,Dermacentor abaensis,Haemaphysalis moschisuga and Dermacentor silvarum.Tick species distribution varied across different port areas.Four Anaplasmataceae species were detected in ticks:Ehrlichia muris,Neoehrlichiosis,Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Anaplasma ovis,with an overall infection rate of 12.59%(185/1 470).The infection rates across the eight ports ranged from 0 to 26.92%,showing highly significant differences(χ2=51.330,P<0.001),with A.ovis being the most prevalent(6.53%).Five Piroplasm species were detected:Theileria ovis,Theileria equi,Babesia microti,Babesia caballi,and Babesia divergens,with a total infection rate of 13.27%(195/1 470).Infection rates across port areas ranged from 0 to 30.59%,also with highly significant differences(χ2=232.598,P<0.001),and B.microti had the highest prevalence(10.07%).Co-infection with Anaplasmataceae and Piroplasm species was common among the tick samples.These findings contribute valuable information on the diversity of tick species and tick-borne pathogens in this border region and offer important reference data for the prevention and control of ticks and tick-borne diseases.
