Abstract

Field experiments were carried out for three types of indica hybrid rice varieties with high yield and good taste(HYGT),high yield but poor taste(HYPT),and low yield but good taste(LYGT)to investigate their differences in yield and its components,grain quality,and grain-filling characteristics and the correlations of the grain-filling characteristics to yield,yield components and grain quality traits.The results were summarized as follows.(1)Compared with HYPT varieties,HYGT varieties showed no significant difference in average grain yield but significant increases of 10.36%and 15.38%in cooked rice taste and comprehensive score,respectively.Compared with LYGT varieties,HYGT varieties showed a significant increase of 15.70%in average grain yield,but no significant difference in cooked rice taste and comprehensive score.(2)There were significant differences in grain-filling characteristics of superior and inferior grains among different types of indica hybrid rice varieties.HYPT varieties were the synchronous grain-filling type,while HYGT and LYGT varieties were the asynchronous grain-filling type.The final weights of both superior and inferior grains of different types of indica hybrid rice varieties showed the trend of HYPT varieties>LYGT varieties>HYGT varieties.(3)The superior and inferior grains of HYGT varieties had lower initial grain-filling potential(R0),lower maximum grain-filling rate(GRmax),lower grain weight at the time of maximum grain-filling rate(Wmax),lower mean grain-filling rate(GR),lower mean grain-filling rates at early,middle,and late grain-filling stages,shorter active grain-filling period(D)and effective grain-filling time(T99),higher proportion of Wmax in final weight,and longer time reaching the maximum grain-filling rate(Tmax)than those of HYPT varieties.(4)The superior and inferior grains of HYGT varieties had higher R0,lower GRmax,Wmax,proportion of Wmax in final weight,and GR,shorter D,and lower mean grain-filling rates at early,middle,and late grain-filling stages than those of LYGT varieties.The inferior grains of HYGT varieties had longer Tmax and T99 than those of LYGT varieties,whereas the superior grains of HYGT varieties had shorter Tmax and T99 than those of LYGT varieties.Correlation analysis showed that R0 of superior and inferior grains was positively correlated with yield,but negatively or significantly negatively correlated with tasting quality traits.In conclusion,HYGT varieties had lower final weights,moderate R0,lower GRmax and GR of superior and inferior grains,a smooth grain-filling process,and shorter T99 of superior grains but moderate T99 of inferior grains.The high yield and good quality were synergistically achieved by higher number of effective panicles,higher total grain number per panicle,and lower amylose content in grains.
