Combining Ability Analysis of Grain Quality Traits in Indica Hybrid Rice under Two Different Sowing Dates

Abstract
To elucidate the genetic characteristics of grain quality traits in indica hybrid rice,an incomplete diallel cross(NC Ⅱ)design was employed with four indica CMS lines as female parents and five indica restorer lines as male parents,generating 20 hybrid combinations.Field trials were conducted under two sowing dates—early sowing on May 26,2022 and late sowing on June 15,2022,in Gaoqiao Town,Changsha County.The combining ability and genetic characteristics of 19 grain quality traits were analyzed under both sowing dates.The results showed there were significant or highly significant differences in most grain quality traits except appearance,taste,and overall score between the two sowing dates.Compared with the early sowing group,the late sowing group exhibited significantly improved milling and appearance quality,decreased crude protein content,gel consistency,rice viscosity and balance,and increased amylose content,alkali spreading value,rice hardness,and elasticity.Most grain quality traits were predominantly controlled by the genetic additive effects.Appearance,taste,overall score,and milled rice length were primarily governed by the genetic additive effects of restorer lines,whereas paste viscosity,brown rice rate,milled rice rate,milled rice length-to-width ratio,and milled rice width were primarily influenced by the genetic additive effects of sterile lines.The genetic non-additive effects dominated balance,elasticity,and gel consistency.The traits with high narrow-sense heritability were milled rice length,milled rice width,length-to-width ratio,head rice rate,amylose content,appearance,taste,overall score,viscosity,brown rice rate,and milled rice rate,which can be selected in early generations of parent improvement.Among the restorer lines,Zhi 7 consistently exhibited excellent performance with high general combining ability of both eating and appearance quality under both sowing dates.Zhi 5 showed excellent performance in chalkiness,chalky grain rate,head rice rate,brown rice rate,milled rice rate,milled rice length,and crude protein content,especially in the early sowing group,being suitable for breeding of early-season hybrids.Among the sterile lines,Xianghe A demonstrated remarkable general combining ability for milling quality traits,while Xiehe A showed strong general combining ability for milled rice length.These parental lines provide valuable genetic resources for further hybridization trials aimed at breeding high-quality hybrid rice varieties.关键词
