Abstract

To investigate the impact of upgrade projects and the flood season on the carbon emission intensity of wastewater treatment plants,a carbon emission intensity accounting model was constructed based on operational data from 2019 to 2023 of a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Jiangsu Province.The mechanism of how upgrade projects and flood season-specific conditions affect carbon emission intensity was analyzed.The results show that the upgrade project significantly improved treatment efficiency,with effluent TP,NH3-N,COD,and TN concentrations decreasing by 80.5%,52.7%,18.9%,and 18.9%,respectively.However,the total carbon emission intensity increased significantly by 110.9%,demonstrating a synergistic contradiction between environmental benefits and carbon emissions.Indirect carbon emissions contributed to 79.8%~89.6%of the total,with electricity and chemical consumption being the dominant sources of indirect emissions,making them key factors determining the carbon emission level of the wastewater treatment process.The upgrade project amplified the sensitivity of the plant's operational load during the flood season to carbon emissions.The increase in total carbon emission intensity during the flood season(178%)was 2.05 times that of the non-flood season(87%).Before the upgrade,the total carbon emission intensity during the non-flood season was 33.6%~44.4%higher than during the flood season.After the upgrade,the total carbon emission intensity during the non-flood season(1.412~1.712 kg·m-3)was 1.1%~12.3%lower than during the flood season(1.610~1.731 kg·m-3).The flood season is a critical period when the annual carbon emission intensity of wastewater treatment plants remains high,and special attention should be paid to changes in carbon emission intensity during this period.This study provides a theoretical basis and data support for the low-carbon transformation and operational regulation of wastewater treatment plants.
