Characteristics of virus occurrence and potential risks in the rural fecal sewage resource utilization model-a case study of a village in central China

Abstract

The global epidemic of viral infectious diseases has imposed a serious burden on the global health system,in which fecal sewage is an important risk source of virus transmission.However,the occurrence characteristics,treatment effectiveness,and potential risks of viruses in the rural fecal sewage resource utilization model have not received sufficient attention.This study investigated the occurrence characteristics and potential risks of viruses within this model in central China.The viral metagenomics approach was used to detect viruses in sewage and aerosols.The results showed that 33 virus families were identified in the septic tank influent,31 in the effluent,13 in the aerosol,12 in the upstream and 15 in the downstream of the rivulet.The potential sources of viruses in the aerosol included background air(68%~72%),fecal sewage(12%~16%),and unknown sources(12%~20%).The downstream sources included upstream of the rivulet(45%),air(21%),fecal sewage(14%),and unknown sources(20%).The dominant virus families in fecal sewage were Fiersviridae,Tombusviridae,Virgaviridae,Mitoviridae,and others.In aerosols,they were Steitzviridae,Fiersviridae,and others.In rivulets,they were Fiersviridae,Tombusviridae,and others.These viruses pose a risk of infection to vertebrates/humans,invertebrates,bacteria,fungi,and plants.Seven vertebrate/human virus families,including Astroviridae,Picobirnaviridae,and others,were detected in fecal sewage,aerosols,and rivulets.These can infect people through fecal-oral and aerosol transmission,posing potential health risks.Therefore,the risk of viruses in the rural fecal sewage resource utilization process model needs attention.
