Heavy metal contamination in groundwater and human health risk assessment at a sulfur-smelting mining area in the Chishui river basin,Yunnan

Abstract
Due to historical factors(e.g.,outdated sulfur smelting processes),the sulfur-smelting mining area in the Chishui River Basin has left behind a large amount of smelting waste slag.Under the effects of rainfall leaching and surface runoff,these slags may release heavy metals,contaminating local groundwater and posing health risks to nearby residents through drinking water exposure.Given the varying attenuation behaviors of heavy metals in groundwater,assessing heavy metal pollution in mining-area groundwater and establishing feasible remediation targets based on evaluation results remain key challenges in current research.This study focuses on a waste slag dump in an abandoned sulfur-mining area,analyzing the characteristics of heavy metal contamination in local groundwater,quantifying the health risks associated with the lateral migration of polluted groundwater,and deriving remediation targets for the pollution source based on protecting the health of downstream villagers.Results indicate severe heavy metal pollution in the study area,primarily involving Mn,Cu,Ni,Co,As,and Zn.Health risk assessment,based on Domenico's steady-state model of heavy metal migration to downstream receptors,revealed that Co,Cu,Ni,and As pose varying degrees of health risks via groundwater consumption.Specifically,the carcinogenic risk of As was 9.92×10-5,while the non-carcinogenic hazard quotients(HQ)for the four pollutants ranged from 1.27 to 123,with Co exhibiting the highest HQ(123).The derived source-area remediation targets for protecting villagers'health were 2.21×10-2 mg·L-1(Co),2.95 mg·L-1(Cu),1.48 mg·L-1(Ni),and 4.49×10-4 mg·L-1(As).This study successfully identified and warned against potential health risks from drinking groundwater downstream of the sulfur-mining area,providing a scientific basis for pollution control and remediation of heavy metals in mining-affected groundwater.关键词
