Abstract

X-complex asteroids are an important group of celestial bodies that exhibit no diagnostic spectral features in the visible to near-infrared(VNIR)range and display diverse compositional types.Some of them may represent residual metallic cores of differentiated bodies,making them key targets for studying early solar system thermal evolution and space mining activities.Due to the lack of distinct spectral absorption characteristics in the VNIR band,thermal infrared hyperspectral observations serve as a crucial means for investigating X-complex asteroids.This study utilizes mid-infrared data from the James Webb Space Telescope(JWST)to analyze seven X-complex asteroids with poorly constrained physical properties.By applying the Near-Earth Asteroid Thermal Model(NEATM)and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo(MCMC)method,we inverted their emissivity,diameter,thermal inertia parameter,and geometric albedo.Leveraging the high spectral resolution of JWST across continuous bands,this study improves the reliability of inversion results compared to previous observations.The results indicate that the diameters of these seven asteroids range from 17.30 to 22.55 km,which is on average 41.5%smaller than the values in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL)database,suggesting a systematic overestimation of diameters for small X-complex asteroids in prior studies and consequently higher geometric albedos than previously recognized.The retrieved infrared emissivity spectra show that their emissivity is 0.064-0.093 lower than that of silicate asteroids,implying possible coverage by low-emissivity materials.All asteroids exhibit distinct spectral features in the mid-infrared range,further supporting the reliability of the inversion results.
