Statistical Characteristics of Warm-Sector Snowstorms in Northern Part of Northern Xinjiang

Abstract
Using data including daily precipitation from 12 national stations in northern part of northern Xinjiang,sounding station data,and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data during the cold seasons(October to May of the following year)during 1980-2024,this study statistically analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution of warm-sector snowstorms in different regions,as well as the vertical variation characteristics of the wind and temperature fields,and performed a classification.The results showed that the average annual number of warm-sector snowstorm days in northern part of northern Xinjiang was 5.1 days per year,with more days occurring in the Altay region.The average annual frequencies of local and regional snowstorm processes were 1.4 and 0.9 events per year,respectively;local processes were more frequent in the Ta'e Basin,while regional processes were most frequent in the Altay region.Snowstorm processes lasting 1 day were the most common,with those lasting 2-3 days being less frequent.The number of snowstorm days showed a linear increasing trend,which was not significant in the Ta'e Basin.Snowstorm processes of all types also exhibited increasing trends,with only the increase for the whole-region type being significant.There were substantial differences in the inter-decadal variations of the number of snowstorm days,as well as those of local and regional snowstorm processes.Affected by terrain,the distribution was uneven in the Altay region,but relatively uniform in the Ta'e Basin.At 500 hPa,the main influencing systems were the low-vortex bottom type and trough front type for the Altay region;the low vortex type and trough front type for the Ta'e Basin;and the low-vortex bottom type for the whole-region type.On the surface weather map,the main types were the low-pressure type and saddle pattern for the Altay region;the low-pressure front type for the Ta'e Basin;and the low-pressure south type for the whole-region type.Low-level inversion before snowstorms occurred most frequently in association with the whole-region type.Easterly airflow(or jet)below 700 hPa was most prevalent in the Altay region.关键词
