Abstract

This study focuses on optimizing the substrate materials of CVD-coated graded cemented carbide tools.Graded cemented carbide substrates with varying β-free layer thicknesses were prepared by controlling the key parameter of holding time during gradient sintering.The effects of β-free layer thickness on microstructure,physical properties,and cutting performance under low-speed heavy-load conditions were systematically investigated.Experimental results indicate that extending the holding time thickens the β-free layer,slightly increases the substrate hardness,reduces the coercive magnetic force,and increases the relative magnetic saturation.However,an excessively thick β-free layer causes severe plastic deformation in the surface cobalt-enriched zone,exacerbating the rake face collapse and flank wear,ultimately leading to premature tool failure.Tools with an appropriately moderate β-free layer thickness exhibit superior coating integrity and cutting-edge stability,significantly extending cutting life and better meeting the requirements of low-speed,heavy-load machining conditions.
