Impact of Selenothrips rubrocinctus Infesta-tion on Volatile Compounds in Leaves of Three Mango Cultivars

Abstract
[Objective]Mango(Mangifera indica L.)is a nutrient-rich tropical fruit,and Guangxi is a major mango-producing region.This study aimed to analyze the components and their differences in leaf volatile organic compounds(VOCs)in three major mango cultivars in Guangxi before and after infestation by Selenothrips rubrocinctus,to reveal the regulatory effect of thrips in-festation on the volatile metabolites in mango leaves to provide a reference for extracting or synthe-sizing active substances for pest control from mangoes.[Method]Volatiles from young leaves of two-year-old grafted seedlings of three mango cultivars(Jinhuangmang,Tainong No.1,and Guire 82)were collected using dynamic headspace adsorption.Subsequently,the adults of Selenothrips rubrocinctus were introduced onto the plants.After seven days of infestation,volatiles from the damaged leaves were collected with dynamic headspace adsorption again.The chemical composition of the collected leaf volatiles was detected and analyzed using coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS).[Result]In the three mango treatment groups,a total of 60 com-pounds were identified from the leaves damaged by Selenothrips rubrocinctus compared with the 40 compounds identified from the healthy leaves in control groups.Collectively,77 compounds were identified in the treatment and control groups.These comprised 21 terpenes,17 esters,14 alkanes,9 aromatic compounds,6 phenols,5 aldehydes,3 ketones,1 alcohol,and 1 ether.Five compounds were consistently present both before and after infestation by the Selenothrips rubrocinctus,which were hentriacontane,tetracosane,n-octadecane,n-tetradecane,and p-ethylacetophenone.Thirty-seven new compounds appeared in mango leaves specifically after infestation by Selenothrips rubro-cinctus.These included 15 terpenes,11 esters,2 alkanes,2 aromatic compounds,4 phenols,1 al-dehyde,and 2 ketones.Three volatile compounds appeared after infestation in the treatment groups of all three cultivars:ethyl benzoate,methyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate,and 2-ethenyl-1,1-dimethyl-3-methylenecyclohexane.[Conclusion]This study demonstrated that infesta-tion by the Selenothrips rubrocinctus triggers the production of specific volatile compounds in man-go leaves including ethyl benzoate,methyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate,2-ethenyl-1,1-dimethyl-3-methylenecyclohexane,D-limonene,and methyl salicylate.关键词
