Abstract

To investigate the differences in biofidelity between the Hybrid Ⅲ dummy and the test device for human occupant restraint(THOR)in the small overlap frontal crash tests,the collision responses of three occupant models:Hybrid Ⅲ dummy,THOR,and the total human model for safety(THUMS)were analyzed and compared under various small overlap frontal crash modes.This research employed a finite element numerical simulation method,utilizing pulse curves from whole-vehicle models in two typical small overlap frontal crash scenarios:deformation and sideswipe as boundary conditions.A driver-side restraint system simulation model was developed by integrating a passenger vehicle cockpit model with complete interior structures and three occupant models(Hybrid Ⅲdummy,THOR,and THUMS),enabling analysis of kinematic responses and injury risk disparities during a small overlap frontal crash.The overall forward movement of the torso of the THOR was similar to that of the THUMS model compared with that of the Hybrid Ⅲ dummy.The head,brain,and lower limb injury risks of THOR were closer to those of THUMS.The overall chest deflection of THOR was approximately 10 mm greater than that of Hybrid Ⅲdummy and THUMS models.The risk of neck injury of THOR was roughly between the risk of neck injury in Hybrid Ⅲdummy and THUMS models,and was closer to the THUMS model.The results indicated that the kinematic behavior and injury risk of THOR in a small overlap frontal crash were more closely aligned with those of THUMS model.Compared with Hybrid Ⅲ dummy,THOR demonstrated higher biofidelity in a small overlap frontal crash.
